French director Eric Rohmer, former critic and Cahiers du Cinema editor, created a very special romantic film series around the difficult choices men make when they fall in love with two women called “Six Moral Tales.” My Night at Maud’s was the third entry, and it was so well received in 1969 that it gave Rohmer international prominence. To this day, it remains Rohmer’s masterpiece, a brilliantly insightful and sublime meditation on adult indiscretions. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays a chaste engineer who thinks he’s met his soul mate in church (Marie-Christine Barrault), yet winds up accidentally spending the night with the seductive Maud (Francoise Fabian), who is more his intellectual equal. Filmed in stark black and white by Nestor Almendros, this is one of those rare films in which qustions about philosophy translate into unexpected answers about the heart. But he and she are soon caught up in feverish subplots involving a slimy Russian expatriate (the amazingly ratlike Fritz Rasp); a blond, blind girl pure of heart but dim of brain (Metropolis’s Birgitte Helm); a missing diamond (case solved in a manner that must be seen to be disbelieved); and the same diamond going missing again–after a memorably grotesqu murder.

No, the plot of The Love of Jeanne Ney doesn’t bear scrutiny, but that only frees you to scrutinize G.W. Pabst’s images instead. The director planned every shot with great particularity, composing the film on the principle of constant motion–of the actors and the action, but also the camera, which nervously seeks out visible clus to the characters’ inner states (a previous Pabst film had been titled Secrets of a Soul). Pabst was fundamentally a realist, unlike his rivals Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau; consequntly, his movies don’t look nearly as “Germanic” as theirs–and except for his legendary collaborations with Louise Brooks, Pandora’s Box (1929) and Diary of a Lost Girl (1929), they haven’t been seen much. Jeanne Ney marks a good opportunity to start reversing this neglect. –Richard T. Jameson

Bette Davis, Bruce Dern, and Tom Skerritt all appear in “The Jailer” (the first color episode in this collection), in which the legendary Davis plays a vengeful widow who kidnaps Kitty in order to lure Matt to his own execution. Ed Asner provides optional commentary for “Hung High,” in which he stars, while a young Dennis Hopper turns up as a villain out to kill a bounty hunter (a charismatic John D. Barrymore, father of Drew). Carroll O’Connor is very effective in “The Wrong Man,” Jon Voight (in the same year as Midnight Cowboy) makes a splash as a convicted murderer who saves Kitty’s life in “The Prisoner,” and Kurt Russell is solid and sympathetic as a young man determined to avenge the death of his father in “Trail of Bloodshed.” Special features include a couple of gag/blooper reels, a 1968 Emmy Award presentation to Milburn Stone, and a pair of old television interviews with Amanda Blake. –Tom Keogh

Just as it did for Hollywood directors during the Depression–the era of Cagney and Raft–the gangster genre in the 1990s allows Russian filmmakers to deal with the political and personal issus of a devastated society, while paying du attention to action and drama. In Brother, Sergei Bodrov Jr. (the son of the director of Prisoner of the Mountains, in which he also stars) plays Danila, a pale young man from the provinces returning home from his military service. He brings nothing with him but an instinctive skill for violence–which he demonstrates when he wanders through a movie set and casually beats up the goons who have been sent to run him off. Heading for St. Petersburg, Danila hooks up with his admired older brother Viktor, now a highly paid hit man. When Viktor farms out a job to Danila, and the younger brother proves to be the greater talent. He goes into business for himself, acquiring new clothes and a new mistress. But with new success comes new enemies; Danila learns to watch his back.

Director Aleksei Balabanov is disturbed by his utterly immoral hero, but is also deeply sympathetic to him–the boy is like an animal, instinctively making his way through an urban wilderness filled with rust and muck. Like the Cagney of Public Enemy, he’s an enterprising young businessman who’s taken his initiative too far. Danila, who expresses a grunting, intolerant nationalism between gunshots, is last seen heading to Moscow, bringing his country’s future with him. No one stands in his way. –Dave Kehr
